Dance Positive Privacy Policy
Dance Positive is committed to protecting the privacy of all users of our platform. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard information when you use our dance education analytics platform and participate in our research studies conducted in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.
Information We Collect
- Account and enrollment information
- Educational progress and achievements
- Mood assessment data (student-private)
- Platform usage and technical data
- Research participation data (optional)
How We Use Your Data

- Family engagement and communication
- University research (deidentified data)
- Platform operations and safety
- Educational improvement and development
Mood Check-In Data Privacy
Within the platform, mood ratings are kept private from other families, stored securely, and never sold, shared publicly, or used for commercial marketing. Because a parent or guardian may help a child log in, a parent who shares a child's login may be able to see that child's check-ins. Deidentified data, with names and direct identifiers removed, may be shared with academic thought partners for independent analysis.
Enhanced Children's Protections (COPPA)
We provide enhanced privacy protections for children under 13, including verifiable parental consent, stricter data retention, age-appropriate procedures, and enhanced security measures. Parents maintain full control over their child's participation and data.

How We Use Your Information
Platform Operations: We use your information to provide access to your personal dashboard, track progress, enable communication between students, parents, and instructors, and ensure platform security.
Educational Support: Information helps us personalize learning experiences, track skill development, provide feedback on progress, and support goal setting and achievement recognition.
Research Advancement: With consent, we use deidentified data to advance scientific understanding of dance's psychological benefits through our partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.
Communication: We send important updates about classes, achievements, research opportunities, and platform features. You can opt out of non-essential communications at any time.
SMS / Text Message Communications
Program. Dance Positive offers an SMS text notification program ("Dance Positive Notifications") for staff members — instructors and administrators — who choose to enroll. Messages are operational and work-related, including class schedule changes, substitute and shift requests, class cancellations, attendance reminders, and payroll or scheduling notices.
How you opt in. Enrollment is through an in-app consent screen presented after you log in to the Dance Positive application. The consent checkbox is unchecked by default and must be actively selected and saved. Providing SMS consent is optional and is not a condition of employment or of access to the platform; declining does not restrict your use of the application.
Frequency, rates, and controls. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply. You can reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe and HELP for assistance.
We do not share or sell your SMS data. We do not share or sell your mobile phone number or your SMS opt-in consent with any third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes. Mobile opt-in information is used solely to deliver the text messages you have requested. The only sharing that occurs is with our messaging provider (Twilio), acting as our subcontracted service provider under a data processing agreement strictly for the purpose of delivering these messages. This SMS opt-in and consent information is excluded from the general information-sharing provisions described below and will not be shared with third parties.
Kept separate from research. Mobile phone numbers and SMS opt-in consent collected for this messaging program are used only to deliver the requested messages. They are not included in any research dataset, are not shared with the University of Pennsylvania or other academic partners, and are not used for mood assessment or research purposes.
Information Sharing and Disclosure
No Data Sales: We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for commercial purposes.
Research Partners: Deidentified data may be shared with academic thought partners for independent analysis under strict data use agreements. (Mobile phone numbers and SMS opt-in data are excluded from this sharing, as described in the SMS section above.)
Service Providers: Trusted partners help us operate the platform (hosting, email, analytics, SMS delivery) under strict data processing agreements that require the same privacy protections.
Legal Compliance: We may disclose information when required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of users.
Business Transfers: In the event of a merger or acquisition, user information may be transferred, but privacy protections will be maintained.
Data Security Measures
Encryption: All sensitive data is protected using industry-standard AES-256-CBC encryption both in transit (SSL/TLS) and at rest in our databases.
Access Controls: Role-based access controls ensure only authorized personnel can access personal information, with additional restrictions for children's data.
Monitoring: Continuous security monitoring, regular audits, and incident response procedures protect against unauthorized access or data breaches.
Data Minimization: We collect and retain only the information necessary for platform operation and research purposes.
Data Retention and Deletion
General Retention: Account information is retained while your account is active and for 30 days after account closure to allow for account recovery.
Enhanced Children's Protection: For users under 13, personal information is deleted within 24 hours of consent withdrawal. For users 13-17, deletion occurs within 7 days.
Research Data: Research participation data is retained according to our research protocols and may be kept in deidentified form for up to 7 years for research integrity.
Legal Hold: Information may be retained longer if required by law or pending legal proceedings.
